WATERLINETHE BAY IS NOT THE PARK

Resurrection Bay is the warm-up: protected water, otters, sea lions. The tidewater glaciers and the open-Gulf swell start past the bay mouth — five of the seven cruises go there; two don’t. Season May–September. Rain is normal; boats cancel for waves, not weather. Park entry itself is free.

What a Kenai Fjords cruise actually costs at the register

We ran all seven through booking — same date, one adult, taxes in. Major Marine’s checkout matched its ads within 33 cents. Pursuit added $1.98 to $44.28 on every boat.

The pattern the headline ratings hide: the more you pay, the less value riders say they got. Captain’s Choice wears a 5.0 headline on 31 reviews — and the worst subscores of all seven (guide 4.6, value 4.3).

MAJOR MARINE

Checkout matches the ad. Binoculars on board; shuttle from the rail depot and cruise port; sandwich choice on park cruises. The catch: its bay cruise carries no food at all. Check-in at Harbour 360 Hotel lobby, 1412 4th Ave, 1 h before sailing.

PURSUIT

Hot lunch, wildlife guide and port fees included, $1 goes to the SeaLife Center. The catch: every advertised price grew at checkout — $1.98 to $44.28 — and no shuttle is mentioned.

WHALE WATCHING · SEASON, SPECIES AND THE BOAT

Seward whale watching tours: the season, and which cruise

No boat leaving Seward is a whale-watching boat. Whales are what the seven cruises on this page hope to find on the way to the ice, and the species you can hope for depends entirely on the month you sail. Below: what the National Park Service publishes for these waters, what the operators put in writing, and which of the seven actually name a whale by species.

SPECIES AND SEASON: U.S. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE · PRICES: OUR OWN CHECKOUT AUDIT

SPECIES
MARAPRMAYJUNJULAUGSEPOCTNOV
GRAY WHALE
LATE MAR – MID MAYPassing the park northbound for the Bering and Chukchi seas. Gone before the summer fleet sails.
HUMPBACK
MID-APR – NOVFeeding around Kenai Fjords for the whole season, after a migration of about 3,000 miles from Hawaii and Mexico.
ORCA
NO SEASON PUBLISHEDResident, transient and offshore orcas all use these waters. The Park Service publishes no window — only that super pods have gathered on and around 1 August since 1998.
FIN · MINKE
NO SEASON PUBLISHEDBoth are on the park’s own species list and neither has a published window. The bar stays empty rather than guessed.

AXIS RUNS MARCH TO NOVEMBER — THE MONTHS BOATS RUN FROM SEWARD. AN EMPTY TRACK MEANS THE PARK SERVICE PUBLISHES NO WINDOW FOR THAT SPECIES, NOT THAT IT IS ABSENT. READ 25 AUG 2026.

WHICH BOAT ACTUALLY NAMES A WHALE

Of the seven listings we audited, two name a whale by species — the six-hour flagship ($265.23) and the Resurrection Bay Sightseeing cruise ($199.24), both listing orcas and humpbacks outright. The other five say “wildlife” and leave it there.

The split that decides your day is not the wording, it is where the hours go. The two bay boats stay inside Resurrection Bay for the whole trip — $165.93 for 4 h and $199.24 for 4.5 h. The five park boats spend a large part of the day running out to tidewater ice and back, from $265.23 for 6 h up to $341.55 for 8 h.

So: if the glacier is why you are buying, take a park boat and treat a whale as a bonus. If the whale is why, the cheapest ticket on this page is also the one that spends every one of its hours in the bay.

WHAT NOBODY ON THIS DOCK GUARANTEES

A sighting. One of the seven puts it in its own listing: whale sightings are not guaranteed. Read that as the house rule for all of them — nobody here sells you an animal, they sell you four to eight hours of looking, and the crews are scored on how hard they look.

And the population is not scenery. The AT1 group of transient orcas that hunts these waters numbered 22 animals before the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill. Fifteen are presumed dead. It has stood at seven since 2010 with no calf recorded, and federal managers class it as depleted and not recovering.

If you sail between late March and mid-May, the whale you are most likely to see is a gray, and no boat on this page targets them — the spring cruise that does runs 20 March to 16 May 2027 at $109 for four hours, is not one of the 51 Seward listings we track, and earns us nothing. It is still the right answer for those eight weeks.

ASKED BEFORE BOOKING

Nine honest answers about Kenai Fjords cruises

QWhich cruise should I actually book?

The 6-hour Glacier Cruise with Lunch ($265.23 at checkout, 4.86★ across 895 reviews) if you have a full day. The 4-hour bay cruise ($165.93) if a ship or train limits you. Northwestern ($341.55, 8 h) if you sleep in town.

QIs the advertised “from $X” price real?

Depends on the operator. Major Marine’s checkout matched its ads within 33 cents on all three boats. Pursuit added $1.98–$44.28 on all four: “from $232” became $276.28, “from $285” became $286.98. Snapshot: read Aug 25, 2026 for Aug 30, 2026, one adult, taxes in.

QHow do Major Marine and Pursuit differ?

Major Marine: honest checkout, binoculars, shuttle from the rail depot and cruise port, sandwich choice — but its bay cruise carries no food at all. Pursuit: hot lunch, wildlife guide and port fees included — no shuttle mentioned, and every price grows at checkout.

QDo all seven enter the national park?

No. Five do. The two half-day cruises ($165.93 and $199.24) stay inside Resurrection Bay — beautiful, calmer, but no tidewater glacier. The bay is not the park.

QCan I fit a cruise on the day my ship departs?

The 4-hour bay cruise, yes — riders report doing the early bus from Anchorage, the cruise, and a 6 pm boarding. A 6–8-hour park cruise on departure day is how people miss ships.

QWill I get seasick?

Park cruises cross open Gulf swell — a real risk, and crews openly deal with it (one August review thanks them for cleaning up). Take motion tabs an hour before. Bay-only cruises stay in protected water.

QDo boats run in rain?

Yes. Drizzle and low cloud are the regional default; glaciers calve regardless. Cancellations happen for sea state, not rain.

QHow do I see a glacier for free?

Drive to Exit Glacier — the only road-accessible corner of the park. $0 entry, free parking and trails. You give up the tidewater calving and the wildlife of open water.

QWhat does Captain’s Choice’s 5.0 rating mean?

It’s real but thin — 31 reviews. Its subscores are the weakest of all seven: guide 4.6, value 4.3. It also carries a checkout markup of +$1.98. The unfixed route is genuinely loved by wildlife chasers.
